LITERACY
sDuring the year we have a heavy focus on letters, letter sounds, word patterns and manipulating words. We also use sight words and a word wall as we help children learn to put their thoughts and ideas on paper. I use phonics, Writer's Workshop, and Reader's Workshop models in my classroom to develop a solid literacy foundation.
Reading Strategies: Read the pictures, Read the words, Retell a familiar story
We have just begun our Journeys curriculum and are focusing heavily on a letter of the day. In centers the children are practicing the letter formation and letter sound not of the letter of the day but of all letters as they work towards mastery of the alphabet and its sounds. We are also beginning some basic sights words.
In writing, Journeys has the kids working on labels, captions, and short sentences.

MATH
Over the year we will focus on counting, number identification and writing up to 100, and a few mathematical concepts- adding and subtraction, breaking apart shapes, and more. We have a strong emphasis on using hands-on manipulatives for the children explore as they learn these concepts and ideas.
In math, we are focusing on numbers 0-5: how to count the objects, write the number, and compare their value. We are comparing numbers- which are greater or less.
As always, continue practicing counting numbers up to 100 (higher is great though!).
